Yes, Richard, I left that out-sorry. Here is the fragment from
~/.xawtv that I use for that:

    [defaults]
    .
    .
    .
    [External]
    norm = ntsc
    channel = 9
    input = composite1
    audio = stereo
    color = 50%
    bright = 50%
    hue = 50%
    contrast = 50%

for using an external VHS or DVD player or set top box with the WinTV
card.
