And so it did!  I also had to edit the config files in
/etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5 changing RadioState from 1 to 0.  Don't know why
exactly, just read it somewhere.  The light now comes on.

$ sudo ifup wlan0 reports:

Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

I've changes the settings on my router just to see if I can get this
working.  Temporarily disabled the encryption and set a broadcast SSID.

$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan still reports:

wlan0     No scan results

Not sure what to do next.  More Google probably.
