KDE vs. Gnome (Questions, not a Troll)

I can't answer the KDE one, since I don't use it but...
the _quickest_ way I know of to make a desktop icon...
Press ALT-F2 (default keys to open the 'run application' box)
Enter the name of the program (or select from the list)
Drag the icon from that box to the desktop, or tool bar, or menu...
And you're done. You can close the run box, run the program, or add more icons!
Although, the home folder is slightly different from a regular
launcher - I usually just pull it out of the "Places" menu and drag it
to the desktop for those who ask. (this is so it maintains the Themed
icon).
