It contains all of the "hidden" options for various gnome programs and
components. Things that are kind of preferences, but most people
wouldn't want to change - and hence not bother cluttering up their user
interface with. Kind of like the Windows registry, but better sorted,
and (usually) with notes about what the various options do.
