my dvd/cdrw combo doesn't recogonize any dvd disks

Got a somehow similar problem. So I've got a DVD-RW Drive. CD's are 
always recognized, but DVD's are recognized only sometimes. So it even 
happens that the medium is recognized I write on the DVD and then during 
the write the medium isn't recognized anymore. Had the same Problem with 
Sarge.
It's not a hardware bug, because the DVD works fine under Windows. A 
besides it's a Philips DVD RW
