my dvd/cdrw combo doesn't recogonize any dvd disks

DVD and CD players are about the most finicky component of any computer 
system. I just went through this same issue. If you can confirm that the 
behavior is the same in another OS (knoppix maybe) then I will wager 
that your dvd player is at the end of its life, or its lense is dirty. 
Due to the smaller wavelength laser (this is an educated guess) the 
quality and cleanliness of the lense are of higher importance during dvd 
reading than cd writing. I had a dvd drive that required disassembly 
every 6 months or so for cleaning of the lense with a cuetip and alchol. 
After the cleaning it read dvd's great, but before it would only read cd's.

I have also had DVD players that slowly faded in disfunction and could 
not be repaired. They continued to work as CD players though.
