The hald timeout problem was occurring for me when plugging in a USB
thumb drive.  I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.12-rc2 and no longer have the
problem.  The "kill switch" problem is related to the wireless card. 
That is caused by a combination of needing the appropriate wireless
drivers (ipw2100) and getting acpi working (look earlier in this thread
for solutions to both of these. ACPI patch is mentioned in #35 by
Gary).



I used this patch to try to fix ACPI.  I don't think it is working
100% for me yet, but well enough for now.
