Installation report for Acer TravelMate 8100

I've got a shiny new Travelmate 8101WLMi and was trying to boot the live
CD. My first boot attemps were a failure as well an "acpi=off" allowed
me to boot. Unfortunately, after everything has been set up, the screen
goes blank, probably due to the yet unsupported graphics card (ATI
Mobility Raedeon X700).

I can press ctrl-alt-f1 to get to the console where this message pops
up every 2 seconds or so: "usb 4-2: hald timed out on ep0in".

Halfway through the boot process I'm told that eth0 has been disabled
by a physical "kill switch". I clicked continue since I wasn't
connected to a network anyway. Does this have something to do with it?
