well, I've trashed my system ...again ;)

well, I was playing around with mythtv and attempted to remove a directory
from /var...but what happened was I went back to kde to get the directory
name..when I went back to konsole I typed in the directory and it overwrote
what I had..or so it seemed :| now what's happened is it's sudo rm
-rf /var/local/tv_grab_au/udo rm -rf /var/

So in short my /var/ directory has been nuked, I've been informed that this
now requires a reinstall (which is fine, I had to resize my partitions
anyhoo)

My question is, if I I backup /usr/ /bin/ /home/ /etc/ and then restore them
when I've reinstalled, will everything be back as it was? or should I do a dd
on the partition?

hmmm ...help!

I don't want to lose any of my configured packages or my settings :(
