My experience with Mplayer on an old PIII 500MHz machine is that choosing 
the right
video driver helps a lot.  Find this under Mplayer Preferences, on the 
video tab.  For me
the xv driver improved image quality and sound synchronisation a lot.  It 
may also be
worth selecting 'Enable frame dropping' on the same tab as this can help 
with maintaining
audio sync, although at the expense of smoothness of video.
