Please give us more info: Dose the CPU get busy while running MPlayer
and/or Xine? Are you using Xv (and not the CPU intensive X11 driver) in
both application? Does it happen in all media you have or with some
specific files? Do you have problem with audio only files (like MP3 and
WAV)?.

In a nutshell: you should use Xv whenever possible (or GL/GL2 if you
have hardware OpenGL acceleration) to avoid stressing the CPU (when the
processor is overloaded it can't handle the syncing of the audio and
video very will).

To check if you have Xv support: type "xvinfo" in a terminal within
GNOME or KDE.
