There is a rather good review of Ubuntu at:-

It is written by a hardware hacker who has had his "A healthy dose of contempt for desktop environments : broken" by the distro. He makes the point that Ubuntu clearly douse not want you to have to re-compile the kernel, which is a good thing specially as it is the most responsive desktop disto he has seen...
I think the lack of need to re-compile the kernel is a real vote winner for newbies and should be mention prominently on the website.
His only real problem is the amount of bugs but as he clearly states we are currently looking at a beta.
