That's not "a Debian package", that's "a package in .deb format".
There's a big difference - and the difference is to do with who looks
after dependancies with other packages, upgrades, and so on.
The Freemind .deb file "Depends: j2re1.4 | java2-runtime" and installs
into /usr/share, with a symlink in /usr/bin.
Ubuntu does not provide Java, which means by extension that it cannot
provide freemind. However, the support pages
(http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/faq/helpcenterfaq.2004-09-16.3469703387)
recommend http://wiki.osuosl.org/display/DEV/Java+on+Debian - and in
fact I've followed those instructions, and installed the freemind.deb
(sudo dpkg -i freemind_0.7.1-1_all.deb) , and it works fine.
