Hi,
Final thoughts aside, since you are using Nvidia you may be
experiencing a problem a lot of people have had. Try following these
directions from Fabio, below:

Can you kindly try to install this driver:
http://people.no-name-yet.com/~fabbione/nv/i386/
grabbing the 2 .o files and copying them to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
and restart X??
