Hi Jeff,

thank you for this information. That got my finally to turn on and try
out the UTF-8 locale. No problems found yet.

After adding the xfonts*transcoded packages from universe everything
went fine with the euro symbol and the ISO8859-15 german locale; thanks
LaMont for the hint. 
I already guessed that those packages were in universe, but preferred to
stay out of the "unsupported" repository. I thought euro-support would
be worth to be included in main and brought up the issue here.

Now I'm using UTF-8, and everything seems to work fine. I removed the
universe sources entry, purged the *transcoded stuff and am happy to be
"fully supported" again ;-)
