can't help you with your compilation problem, but out of curiosity, do
you know how  Links compare to Elinks (available in Ubuntu) nowadays?

I have always used the later. And from a vague recollection Elinks was
a fork from Link 1-2 years ago. And as such if you can't compile Links
maybe Elinks is good enough substitute for your needs,
