GRUB error after first boot

Hi!

I've installed Ubuntu 4.10 (Final) and after the first boot all i get is
this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.
GRUB Hard Disk Error

The computer is brand new, nothing was installed on it before.

I've since installed Fedora Core 2, and everything works OK, so I guess
it isn't faulty hardware.

Ubuntu (also FC2) was installed on a SATA disk (only HD), Epox EP-8K9A7i
motherboard (VIA KT400 + VT8237 chipset), AMD Sempron + IDE CD burner.

LiveCD doesn't work either, GRUB freezes after at Loading stage1.5.

Since I preffer Ubuntu over Fedora, I would be greatful for any remedy.

P.S. I've installed Ubuntu on several onther machines (including on SATA
drives) and never before had this issue
