I disabled all possible beeps in the BIOS including the suspend/resume
beep.

Why do you say "most other linux distributions"? Is there something
different with ubuntu?

I think the beep I get is similar to the one I get when I enable the
resume beep in the BIOS. But I will try again to compare them.
