system hang on screen saver

Just out of the blue I would suspect the fglrx-driver from ati. Ati's
drivers sucks, and there binary-only linux driver sucks even more. Try
disabling all opengl-using xscreensaver, or just deinstalling the
package 'xscreensaver-gl' via synaptic. I think you shouldn't see those
hangs anymore, but be aware from opengl-using apps.
