This is something I have found with 2.6 on ppc (I'm using a blueberry ibook). 
2.4 sleeps fine, although I have had suggested to try using pmud instead of 
pbbutonsd, I haven't had time yet. On my machine it appears to be sleeping too,
but if I hit the power button it 'resumes'
