I tried yesterday with the RC version to replace pbbuttonsd with pmud.
 After successfully making that change, I had the same problem with
pmud.

I had Debian sarge with the new installer on my iBook.  It also had a
problem with sleep, but in that case it was with pmud.  When I
replaced pmud with pbuttonsd it would sleep and awaken O.K.

Is there any documentation on what was done to create the i386 LIve CD?
