Quality drop in the latest version?

If sound works in other applications, it's not likely to be a kernel
problem.

You could try removing these, just to be sure that you're working with a
minimum of unknowns.

This bug has been present for nearly a year, though I suppose the symptoms
could vary with circumstances.

I just tested creating a "Home" icon to the panel, and it opens my home
directory as I expect.  Perhaps you added a "Documents" one rather than
"Home"?

Anything you can try in order to narrow down the problem would be appreciated.
