eval $(lesspipe)
Put this in your shell init script (reference other threads and local
variations, but Ubuntu seems to do the right thing about .bashrc by
default. Add it right below the (commented out by default) lines that
enable bash completion... then, if you use the shell enough to worry
about enabling lesspipe, do yourself a favor and uncomment the three
lines that enable that smarter tab-completion. If it rubs you the
wrong way you can turn it back off, but do give it a try!
Or maybe you'd prefer the subtly different behavior of lessfile. man
lesspipe to see them both described.
