Oh. I see. I didn't get that impression from reading the bug report,
but I'll take your word for it. :-)

For the record, I've never seen any negative side effects from using
it - and my usage goes back to like, Slackware 2-3 (it's been a while
anyway).

For the time being I'm perfectly content with the quick fix John
mentioned, so I'll let the smarter people decide on a solution.
