This sounds like the issue where that file unintentionally gets
assigned root ownership. In your xterm window, try this:

sudo chown USER:GROUP ICEauthority

Obviously stick your own username and group in there (they're both the
same AFAIK). It'll ask you for your own password because of the
sudo-ing.
