What kind of fiddling? I don't understand your last sentence.
The snd-intel8x0 driver should be automatically loaded, and you should not
use i810_audio (that is an older OSS driver).

This was just recently noticed and fixed to use ESD.
Note that ALSA provides an OSS-compatible interface, which is what we use in
Warty. You do not need to change this based on which driver you use (though
you should not need the OSS drivers at all, anyway).
