Before you make it perminant, you need to try adding a command-line
option to the kernel when it boots. You need to press Escape at boot-up,
to bring up the grub boot menu. You need to then edit the boot line for
the kernel you are booting, and add acpi=off to that line.

To make it perminant, you need to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and
add the same command-line argument to the kernel line.
