Adding Truetype fonts to ubuntu

I'd like to add some extra fonts windows fonts if I can so that I can
use them in OpenOffice etc.. Where do I put them and what do I need to
do to make them work..

I checked out the Debian Linux Survival guide section on fonts:

But the config file they refer to doesnt exist in ubuntu??

Any help would be appreciated...
