I generally find that it's more useful to mount smb shares into the main 
filing system - that way anything can access them.

I have a little program (written in python) which I use to do this 
easily and quickly - you can define what shares ("volumes") you want to 
mount, and where you want to mount it. If you would like a copy let me 
know and I'll send it to you - it's pretty simple and works on all linux 
distros I've tried so far :)
