You can do that, but to get a root console all you have to do is log in 
then type "sudo -s" and then enter your normal login password (again).

Ubuntu is trying to run with the root account as a non-login account for 
safety, and whilst the jury is still out as to whether this will work 
for everything, I suggest we try to stick to it where we can. So far 
I've fould "sudo -s" to be enough for all my root needs.
