To Change the root password, reboot the computer as Linux Recovery
mode, and then simply type passwd and change the password. I'm
relatively new to linux, so this can not be the more optimal mode of
doing this, but it worked for me.
For the mouse issue, try doing this:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
