assuming that the average user wants this, but i think the average user
will just want to use her desktop and the applications....looking at my
girlfirend, she wants to be able to read mail, browse, write her html
and css stuff and then be able to easy upload it to our server. she
didn't know about the registry when using windows and doesn't know too
much about the command line of linux, she just wants a tool to cope with
the task.

i know about this power (in fact i'm earning my life based on it) and
i'm willing to give my knowledge away (thats why i'm writing here)
because it increases this power (and where would i be if not anyone had
taught this stuff to me too). getting back to my above statement, how
many win users do you know that are able to tweak their registry?
if ubuntu wants to cope with the huge userbase out there, ther is a
_must_ to make the distribution accessible for the non techie (the "just
works approach").

it's nice that you aim to learn more about "this stuff under the hood"
and you're very welcome to aks every question i can answer, but the
masses (my parents, the average surfer guy, your grandma, whoever)
should not need to become a mechanic to drive their cars ;-)

the list here exploded like i expected when i did my first install and
recognized what the team had done, once the distribution is out and will
get reviews, press releases and add-on cds in the average IT papers it
will explode again but with a lot more of these people who just want it
working without "dark rooms" *g*. it is good to be perpared !!

my 2 eurocent change ;-)

ciao
