you are not a player or you don't use specific 3D applications (like
CAD) there are no benefits but only troubles.

You need to download the nvidia package from nvidia.com and install it.
It will compile and load the kernel for you. In order for the
compilation to be successful you will have to install the linux-headers
for your running kernel (apt-cache search linux-headers and uname -a
will help you to determine the one you need).
Add nvidia to /etc/modules.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and select the nvidia driver.

You should be up and rocking now.
