I know this sounds daft. I also know it's not needed on all systems. 
However, on some it is.

When you unmount it, eject it:
eject /dev/sda


If this works for you I suggest you report a bug so it gets looked at. 
Unmounting should "do whatever it takes" so users are not hassled with 
inconsistent and unexpected hehaviour.
