Re: . Trying the smartlink driver from:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
Sadly NO! The SmartLink software does NOT support device Pctel 134d:xxxx
devices. The PCtel modem business has beem bought by Conexant and they have
NO interest in updating the Linux support code
Here is a general support suggestion however.
Ubunto should include the slamr.ko driver in its releases as SuSE has begun
with the 9.1 release, at my suggesion and with the approval of
SashaK at smlink.com. Under Debian it is provided as the package
sl-modem-source
The slamr.ko enables a test which will diagnose modem codec for some 90% of
the soft modems.
# modprobe slamr
prompts a diagnostic analysis of the softmodem hardware,
which can next be selectively read by
# dmesg | grep slamr
The critical output is a line including:
mc97 codec is XXXnm
with n,m digits
If XXX is SIL
for SILicon Lab supplier, then the SmartLink slmodem-2.9.n software usually
support the softmodem,
OR alternately the snd-intel0xm.ko driver (in the regular kernel releases
now) with slmodem-2.9.9-alsa creating ports.
see my Modem/Slmodem.txt for details
If XXX is CXT
the only option is the hsflinmodem software from www.linuxant.com for
ConeXanT soft modems
If XXX is BCM
it is a Broadcom modem and snd-intel0xm.ko driver with slmodem-2.9.9-alsa
MAY serve, through we don't have a success report yet.

Argh, this is what I've expected but hoped it won't be the case.
Now I can explain the failures during PCTel driver compilation.

I found also an unofficial PCTel driver for kernel 2.6.0 which anyway
did not compile on 2.6.8. It's expected to work only on 2.6.0 and is
also experimental.

At this point I think I three options:
. Trying the smartlink driver from:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
. Switching Ubuntu from kernel 2.6.8 to 2.4.x.
(I really would like to avoid this!)
. Replace the internal PCTel PCI modem with an external one.
(Brute force solution to the problem ;)
Any suggestions regarding this? Thanks.

Thank you very much for support.
Best regards,
I.
P.S. I Cc: this email to the ubuntu-users at lists.ubuntu.com mailing list
in order to involve also the Ubuntu community. Folks there may have my
same troubles with internal PCI modems (PCTel).
