Ubuntu kernel patches

Ok, I'm GUESSING I found them, but with something kernel related I want
to make sure. The package is linux-patch-debian-2.6.8.1 and installs
to /usr/src/linux-patches correct?

Now, applying them....I assume one would run the "debian" script located
in /usr/src/linux-patches/all/2.6.8.1/apply right? But it's telling me
I'm not in the kernel top level directory, so something has to be
moved....do I have to move the whole patch directory or just the script?
Or somehow run the script from the sources directory? Or am I missing
something...I remember seeing some sort of "patch" utility on the
repository somewhere...
