/opt is reserved for the installation of add-on application software
packages. (Debian Policy Manual:
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-3.8.html )
I think, "add-on application software" excludes debian/ubuntu package
sotware as I never had a package installing something into /opt (well, I
have not been using Debian stuff for long ;)...
But as I said, one can install firefox and thunderbird where ever he
wishes *g*
