Can't get new Radeon 9600se working

Hey,
Does anyone else have a Radeon 9600se that they have working well with
Ubuntu?
It's only a couple of hours old so I don't know much about setting it
up. It's just replaced an old pci voodoo3 which has been working
flawlessly with ubuntu for the past few weeks. I haven't tried any other
OS' to see if it's ubuntu specific but I'll probably bung on a copy of
XP on a partition some time tomorrow.
1)
Anyway, after a fresh Warty install I get GDM and log in to gnome and
the colours are REALLY washed out. I don't even know that that's the
right way to describe it. For example, the cpu monitor on the panel is
now light yellow. Probably the best indication is to go into desktop
background chooser and into color selection. Instead of seeing all the
primary and main colours there aren't any reds, browns, greens.
2)
I also tried out the binary driver thing from the wiki. I rebooted and
everything was working except after a short while the screen would turn
itself of. When I turned the monitor on and off it came up with a non
responding screen whited out. I couldn't kill X-windows or change to a
console.
Additionally any experimenting with GL, [screensavers, tuxracer]
instantally locked the system and I was forced to hit the reset button.
Obviously the color thing is more important to me than the 3d thing
right now, which could just be a crappy ati driver I suppose.
Thanking you in advance,
Lex.
PS
Oh yeah, the v/ card is a powercolor if that matters.
