Cannot remove "removable" drives

I've had no luck ejecting Jaz disks from my Ubuntu warty system.
As soon as I mount them, the desktop notices and displays a window
full of the contents.
-- it's a separate issue, but I'd like to disable this too
I can mount or unmount either through the GUI or through the
command line, but any attempt to "eject" them fails, either manually
(throught the button on the face of the drive), throught the 'eject'
command, or through the GUI "eject" menu item. In each case,
the drive lights flash for a bit, then the drive gets remounted and
I see the GUI window again.
I'd really like to eject the silly things because I need to put a different
volume there. I don't want to have to reboot just to do that.
Help?
