Hi Oli, thanks for the link.
I think the terminator is okay, the drive is alone on the SCSI card (I
removed my SCSCI scanner), and it's terminator is activated.
Also, I tried with Win XP and everything was fine, so I came to Ubuntu
to try some more.
I burnt a few CD's and did countless experiments. This is the current
situation:
Nautilus has managed to burn a full CD (683 out of a 700MB CD), at full
speed (x12 in this case) with no problem, and I was able to read the
disc perfectly afterwards.
It seems that it's Nautilus who doesn't want to burn CERTAIN
files/folders. I have say folder 'x' that he doesn't want to prepare the
CDs image of. But I have say folder 'Y' which he is happy with, for some
reason. All folders are in my /home directory so I have permissions to
read them. I tried starting nautilus burner like this "sudo nautilus
burn:///", but I run into exactly the same problems. Some folders he
will burn....some not ! :o(
I tried to 'fool' Nautilus by 'hidding' folder 'X' inside folder 'Y',
but he is not stupid, and he won't burn 'Y' anymore, until I remove 'X'
from it...
Folder 'Y' is only 60MB, so I made lots of copies of it, until it
amounted to 700MB minus a bit for safety's sake. All in all, I had a few
dozen folders, 3,600 picture files, and Nautilus was burning everything
very happily. So sure enough, it works..... just not with some folders,
and I have not managed to find the slightest clue as to why he likes 'Y'
and not 'X'. I really don't know.
Also, I had a look in my /var/log/message file. And big problem :
The file weights 100MB (yes MB, not KB !), it took several minutes for
Gedit to open it. All that weight, about 1,250,000 line comes from a
single, 4 line error message, that was repeated endlessly for about 8
minutes. The rate wa about 2,000+ repeats of that message per SECOND !
Hence the 1,250,000 lines and 100+ MB file...
Obviously it appears to be related to my CD burner (sr0).
Never had such problems with my SCSI scanner, so don't know why the
Adapatec card (very common 2940 one) gives so many error messages with
the CD burner. Maybe it's a problem in the linix driver..don't know.
I have a another SCSI card, not a 2940, but base don the 2940 chip
nonetheless. Will try to use that one see if that makes any difference
in all the problems I am experiencing... :o(
The error message that get repeated zillion time is this :
***************
Dec 27 16:18:48 localhost kernel: Current sr0: sense key Medium Error
Dec 27 16:18:48 localhost kernel: Additional sense: Write error -
recovery needed
Dec 27 16:18:48 localhost kernel: scsi1: ERROR on channel 0, id 2, lun

Vince
