I experience the same problem too sometimes. When it happens to me I
switch to one of the virtual terminals (ctrl-alt-f[1-6]), login as root
(if you can't login as root (which is the Ubuntu-way) login as yourself
and then sudo the following) and I then execute: 'pkill -9 -u
myusername'. This kills _every_ process owned by your user. I then login
in using the gui as one of my test-accounts (everybody should have one
of those), and immediately logout again. Then when I login as myself
again everything is fine.
