DVD playback problem (Warty) (fixed, sort of...)

I now have DVD playback working, but there are a few problems....
The initial problem seemed to be that the DVD disk that I chose to try
has some windows software on it (a DVD player). I guess that was what
caused the initial problem - because the disk is loaded as though its a
data disk. Once that happens, neither Totem or Xine will produce any
video when attempting to play the disk.
Doing an 'umount /cdrom' from a terminal partially solves the problem.
If that is done before any attempt is made to play the DVD, Xine will
then play it and produce video. Totem still doesn't work for me - if I
attempt to use it, it seems to trigger remounting the disk, and I end
up with no video output, and have to restart X before I can get it from
Xine.
This seems like a bug, but I have no idea what it should be raised
against.
In addition to the problem mentioned above, I've found that playback is
sometimes strange - I get a loss of voice synchronisation. Whic is very
annoying when attempting to watch a movie. It isn't consistent - on
some movies it will happen every time, on others, restarting the mahine
will clear the problem. On the same hardware, running Slackware 10, it
has never happened. Anyone have any ideas as to how to track this
problem?
