How to get LinNeighborhood working?

I got the general idea about the arbitrary UID's, but I did have a few
questions...

1. Where does useradd "cut off" on automatically assigned UID's?

2. If this is the only way to fix this issue, why do two of my other
debian based systems have no issue with this configuration?

3. I was under the understanding that my samba setup dodged this issue
by forcing read/write as a specific user (mpd), if this isn't the case
what's the point of the force user/group stanzas in smb.conf?

Just as an aside, I'm not running ldap or nis, just bog-standard samba
out of debian on the server in question. All the issues with connecting
to the share via samba are from my ubuntu desktop, hence the original
post.

Regardless, thanks a bunch for the info.
