It is an incredibly inelegant solution, which is exactly why NFS sucks
and things like OpenLDAP and NIS/YP came into existence. If you're
running a small server however, mucking with uid's is pretty much the
only way to go as setting up LDAP tends to be a pain and NIS sucks
about as much as NFS. :)

What many people will do is assign an arbitrary uid that's higher than
the uid's that useradd auto-generates and use them across the board.
