Sound looping on Sound Blaster 16 card

I installed Ubuntu thursday and have liked it so far (even got nvidia
drivers up and running).  My current issue is that I have a
SoundBlaster 16 card (ENS1371) where sound loops in small chunks (a 64
kb block?) 7 times before going on to the next chunk.   I thought it
was a esd-issue, but it applies to all digital sound sources and is
rather annoying.  I have tried to search for a solution but has
obviously not used the right words.

Is there a kind person who would give me a hint to how I can solve
this issue?  An URL would be fine.
