You can try to get back to OSS but you would be much better off
figuring out ALSA instead. OSS is long since deprecated so any work
you put into it will have to be duplicated on every single install
that uses ALSA (which frankly is all of them except Knoppix which
surprises me immensely).

I don't have the solution with me but I'll try to find out what's
going on after work. You might try looking in google for a sound or
alsa howto that might help you work through it.
