Is there an easy way to "jump" from ALSA to OSS?

Sir, I looked at my /var/log/kern.log where all the logs from the last month
are recorded. The only line where an "error" is recorded is:
Dec 12 19:57:12 localhost kernel: vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
But Ubuntu sees the exact same card/hardware as Knoppix:
Dec 12 19:57:12 localhost kernel: isapnp: Card 'ESS ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive'
And there is no error.

I see. I have to load the right modules. And as the only modules I know
they work are the OSS modules (as you are writing) I think the best way
for me is somehow to make the shift to OSS on Ubuntu.
Maybe someone can describe me the process how I can do it!?
Have I to compile a new kernel? Should I consult the make-kpkg
howtos and go the (for a beginner) hard way?
