Ubuntu AMD64 and VESA

I've just recently installed Ubuntu for AMD64 using the
2.6.8.1-3-amd64-generic kernel. Using the VESA XFree86 device doesn't
bring the X system up, and also corrupts the graphics when in ttys1-6
console mode.
Is there any way to work around this and get the VESA driver working,
as my video device is an onboard Unichrome Pro which isn't supported
by any drivers (yet).
I'm getting a little sick of 640x480x4 :)
