VNC startup

Thank you all very much for the various responses. I am very comfortable on
the command line. My problem is that I am running Ubuntu headless. I want
to log into the to machine using VNC not the GDM. I have a few reasons for
this. First of all I would like to show others from my M$ machines that
there are other worlds out there and it is not only Apple. So I will setup
my routers to forward some port to my Ubuntu box @ home. However I don't
want to have the conversation of "yes there is security in Linux". That
just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. So what I am after is
from TightVNC on my M$ box @ the office, open xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx::XXXXX and get
the login screen of my Ubuntu box @ my house. Now I don't need help with
routing or how to use a console. I need help with the setup of VNC. The
Remote Desktop feature in Ubuntu requires that a user is already logged in.
If no one is logged in then there is no desktop to control. Help?
Thanx again
Mark

Subject: VNC startup
I am very unfamiliar with VNC on Linux, so please forgive my ignorance...
Is there a way to make VNC launch on startup so that I get the login screen,
and everything that is going on for a particular display? For example My
Ubuntu machine is typically inaccessible, and there is nobody logged into
it. I need to control my box from login to logout remotely. All I have
seen is to get VNC working after a login session. If anyone could point me
in the right direction or help out... I would greatly appreciate it.
Mark
