First let me say welcome to the Ubuntu community. The problem you face
is because Firefox is using IPv6 when the Internet doesn't.

The starter guide on this page gives info on how to fix it:

http://kitech.com.my/ubuntu/4.10/index.html

"How to load Web site faster in Mozilla Firefox (disable IPv6)?
01) Read General Notes
02) Applications -> Internet -> Mozilla Firefox
03) Address Bar -> about:config
03a) Filter: -> network.dns.disableIPv6
03b) Change the Value of network.dns.disableIPv6 to true (Double
click)"
